A Talk by Ervad Dr. Minocher Dadabhoy Karkhanawala (BA, MSc, MS, PhD)

 

[Ervad Dr Karkhanavala was born in Mumbai. He passed his B Sc with chemistry and physics, completed his BA and then MSc from Wilson and Elphinstone Colleges. He did his MS in glass technology from New York State College of Ceramics and PhD in organic chemistry from Philadelphia University, USA. He was ordained as a Navar and Martab at Navsari. Ever since he was initiated as a priest at a young age, he wore the white priestly robes with white pugree daily throughout his life in India as well as abroad, at college/university and at his job at Bhabha Atomic Research Centre (BARC). He represented India at the Geneva Conference on “Peaceful Uses of Atomic Energy” and was Group Director, Health Physics Division and Chemical Group at BARC, Trombay when he passed away due to an untimely and tragic accident on 17th November, 1979. Dr Karkhanavala was a devoted scientist, a gifted teacher, an organiser, an administrator, a humanitarian thinker and a staunch follower of the Zoroastrian religion. He practiced what he preached. He believed that, like an escalator, science takes us there, that far but no further. It stops at the material world and that it is partial whereas religion is complete; it sees man as a whole mental, physical as well as spiritual. Religion takes over where science stops.]

 

My subject for discussion is the Zoroastrian method of disposal of the dead in the light of modern science. The theme prayer is from the Vendidad 5 and 6 wherein it is stated:

 

Datare gaethanam astvaitinam ashaum, kva naram iristanam tanum barama Ahura Mazda? Kva nidaathama? Aat mraot Ahuro Mazdao, barezishtvaecha paiti gatushva Spitama Zarathustra, yadhoit dim baidhishtem avazanam suno va kerefsh-kharo vayo va kerefsh-kharo. Aetadha he aete mazdayasna aetem kehrpem hvare-daresya kerenaot.

 

Therein we ask, “O Creator of this physical world, to where shall we remove and where shall we put the bodies of the dead?

 

Then spake Ahura Mazda, “O Holiest of Holy Zarathustra, to the highest place Thou shall carry and there you shall put, where indeed the corpse-eating animals and the birds can see. There shall you carry your Mazdayasnans and shall cause to make that body see the sun or expose to the sun.

In the last sentence is the basic principle of the so-called Khurshed Nagirashni (beholding by the sun), which forms the basis of our method of disposal.

The advent of Avan Mah is celebrated by many Parsees with great gusto as it means unlimited feasting on the great Parsi delicacy of Dal ni Poli. The number of Parsis who mark Avan Mah with the daily recitation of the Avan Yasht is, of course, much less. But those of us who observe the overall progress of the Zoroastrian calendar will be aware of another important event. All Parsi calendars remind their readers that from Roj Hormuz of Avan Mah, the second Gah of the day – normally Rapithwin, is not prayed and is instead substituted with what is called second Havan.

IN MEMORY OF PEER E SABZ

From June 14 to 18 Zarathusties will gather at Peer e Sabz in Yazd
what is it about

Peer E Sabz

Triumphs and tragedy bind people together. The memory of sacrifices made by people to preserve their identity is a binding force that strengthens unity, gives purpose and meaning and acts as a stimulant to preserve and continue on an ancestral path.
Peer e Sabz in Yazd is one such memorial. In the middle of the desert high up on the mountain there oozes droplets of pure spring water from the face of a stone. Otherwise for hundreds of miles in all four directions there is not a drop of water to be found. The rare desert rain is only enough for thorns and shrubs to survive; so such a spring is very dear and earns for itself the greatest of respect that the people can bestow, and what greater than to dedicate it to all those lives lost in preserving their heritage.

For centuries Peer e Sabz has kept alive the memories of the innocent Zarathushti mothers, daughters and sisters, who were raped, tortured and killed or taken as slaves by the invading Arab hordes in the name The story of Peer e Sabz is about one such daughter who was fleeing the Arab hordes, thirsty and tired, dragging herself up the mountain to save her chastity. With no more strength in her limbs to pull her to safety she prays to Ahura Mazda for help, all of a sudden the mountain opens up and swallows her to safety.

Many years latter a Shepard lost in the desert faints of thirst in the heat of summer, and he has a dream. A beautiful damsel wearing a green robe riding a white horse appears to him in his dream and tells him her story and says to him;”if you promise to built a shrine in memory of all your sisters that lost their life to preserve their honour I shall give you water”. He promises, and the droplets of water falling on his face from the face of the stone He collects as many stone that he could find in the desert sand and builds a pond to enshrine the water in memory of the dear women who had suffered at the hands of the invading Arabs.

He finds his way back to town and informs all his people of the episode and since then every summer people go on a five day pilgrimage to this shrine, where they pray, sing and dance in memory of the millions of women who suffered at the hand of the invading horde.
I have heard of two more sites in Iran with the exact same story one in Lorestan and one in Kurdestan. In the desert of Yazd there are a total of five such places of pilgrimage each with its own unique story.
Peer e Hiresht has a shrine built around a black stone which is in the shape of a mother and a child. The story goes that a princess with her child was being pursued by the Arabs and she prays to Ahura Mazda for help. Lighting strikes and she and her child are turned into that black stone thus being saved from torture and rape.

So many shrines with the similar themes tells us of the wide spread atrocities and genocide committed against our ancestors. The kind of atrocities that reduced the Zarathustra Empire to a mere 7711 heads in the 1860’s, when Maneckji Limiji Hataria counted them and Wherever we settle in the world it is but appropriate to come together in memory of Peer e Sabz, the green clad princess who represents the sacrifice of our ancestors, history repeats itself for those who avoid these stories and try to be politically correct.

Note: the five days of the pilgrimage are from 24 to 28 of Khordad

Here is an article written by Ervad Marzban J. Hathiram, on Dastur Azar Kaivan who was born around 1533 in Iran in an illustrious family of priests who traced their genealogy right upto the Mai Abad dynasty. Later on, Dastur Azar Kaiwan left Iran and came to Patna, in India and stayed there along with a group of close disciples.

“The esoteric knowledge of Ilm-e-Khshnoom, which was revealed by Ustad Saheb Behramshah Nowroji Shroff after his stay with the Abed Sahebs of Demavand has not only shed blissful light on our scriptures, traditions, rituals and religious way of life, but has also solved several riddles and complexities which abound in the history of Zoroastrianism. Quite a few seemingly extraordinary or unexplainable occurrences which have been noted by various historians have been properly explained and further expounded by Ustad Saheb and later on in the writings of Dr. Saheb Framroze Chiniwalla. One such occurrence which we will deal with in this essay relates to the life and times of an enigmatic and extraordinary Zoroastrian saint of the 16th century called Hazrat (the pious) Dastur Azar Kaiwan. Although the details of his life are sketchy, they have been thoroughly analysed by Ervad Dr. Jivanji Modi in a paper presented before the 6th Oriental Conference at Patna on 18th December, 1930, and subsequently published, along with his other papers, in a book entitled “Oriental Conference Papers”

In order to properly understand the life of Dastur Azar Kaiwan, it is necessary to explore some other facets of the Zoroastrian faith.”

She is Mother angel.She is Big Sister angel.She embodies all that is good, glorious, giving, generous.She is above definitions.Many who know of her try to classify her, trace her roots, present her history. Yes,Pariamai worship did begin in our motherland Iran and that to me is enough. She is a member of my family,she is everything to me, there may be ancient texts and books about her though I suspect most of the tradition is oral, To me all that is immaterial,. She is an angel,that is enough, One Tuesday morning, I found my Sasumai Banubai Minocher Choquri doing diwa in Pariamai’s name ,she explained me that Pariamai is worshipped everyday, but Pariamai’s power day is TUESDAY .From the plane of Saturn, if her devotees ask for anything truly especially on Tuesday. Pariamai enthrones at door of her devotees house, head and heart removes physical ailments, mental problems and financial worries.

Short Note on the Gathas

While in one Gathic passage ( Yasna 47.3)  Zarathustra refers to God as the “father” of the Holy Spirit, in another (Yasna 30.3) he describes the Holy and the Fiendish Spirits as “twins.” The conclusion that the Fiendish Spirit, too, was an emanation of Ahura Mazdah’s is unavoidable. But we need not go so far as to assume that Zarathustra imagined the Devil as having directly issued from God. Rather, since free will, too, is a basic tenet of Zarathustrianism, we may think
of the “childbirth” implied in the idea of twinship as having consisted in the emanation by God of undifferentiated “spirit,” which only at the emergence of free will split into two “twin” Spirits of opposite allegiance. Truth alone being, in addition to a primordial principle, also an aspect of Ahura Mazdah, the fact that the Fiendish Spirit had chosen Falsehood would all but obliterate his original connection with God.
It would follow that the names “Holy” and “Fiendish” of the two Spirits did not in the prophet’s view pre-exist the choice which they made, but accrued to either as a result of it.

How to take the name of a deceased in any prayer

Several readers of Frashogard have asked the question as to how should the name of a deceased person be taken while doing any prayer for them. Certain prayers, like the Stum no Kardo or the Patet Ruvan ni, have specific places where the name of the deceased is recited. But the question arises in other normal prayers which one may wish to recite in the memory of our deceased persons.
For example, many readers of Frashogard would like to pray the Lakh prayer during the Muktad, in the memory of a deceased relative. Now the Lakh prayer does not have any specific part or sentence where the name of the beneficiary is recited. So many may wonder – how does nature give the benefit – does it go to the person who recited the prayer or does it go to the Ruvan of the person intended?
